Notes:
1.
Pat O'Connor was recognized as the first AWA World Heavyweight
Champion in May 1960, but was given 90 days to defend the
title against Verne Gange or be stripped of the title.
2.
The title was awarded to Verne Gagne after Pat O'Connor
failed to defend the title against Gagne.
3. Crusher
Lisowski won the Omaha version of the World Heavyweight
title from Fritz Von Erich on February 15, 1963 in Omaha,
Nebraska.
4.
Verne Gange won both the Omaha version and the AWA World
title.
5.
Fritz Von Erich won both the Omaha version and the AWA World
title.
6.
Verne Gagne won the AWA World title. He then defeated Fritz
Von Erich on September 7, 1963 in Oamaha, Nebraska to unify
both titles.
7.
Nick Bockwinkle wrestled to a Double-Count Out against WWF
World Heavyweight Champion, Bob Backlund, on March 25, 1979
in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
8.
Nick Bockwinkle was awarded the title when Verne Gagne retired.
9.
During this match, manager Bobby Heenan hit Hogan with a
foreign object. When he attempted to throw it to Bockwinkle
a second time, Hogan caught it and used it himself. Since
both men had used the object, the ref allowed the victory
to stand.
10.
After hearing Heenan’s claims that Hogan won the title unfairly,
AWA president Stanley Blackburn made the controversial decision
to suddenly strip Hogan of the title and return it to Bockwinkle.
11.
To insure that the controversy of their previous encounter
would not happen again, this was a no DQ match.
12.
After the match Blackburn came down to the ring and tried
to have Hogan disqualified for having thrown Bockwinkle
over the top rope. But since this was a no DQ match, Blackburn
simply stripped Hogan of the belt and again returned it
to Bockwinkle. Understandably upset at the way he had been
treated, Hogan left the AWA shortly thereafter.
13.
Rick Martel wrestled to a Double Count-Out against NWA World
Heavyweight Champion, Ric Flair, on October 2, 1985 in Tokyo,
Japan.
14.
The title was awarded to Nick Bockwinkle when Stan Hansen
left the promotion after not appearing in a match on June
28, 1986 in Denver, Colorado, but Hansen took the belt and
defended it on All-Japan cards in July of 1986.
15.
Jerry Lawler unified the World Class Wrestling Association
World Heavyweight Title by defeating Kerry Von Erich on
December 13, 1988 in Chicago, Illinois to become the first
Unified World Heavyweight Champion, but was stripped of
the AWA World Heavyweight title on January 20, 1989 after
the CWA split with the AWA.
16.
Larry Zbyszko wins the title in a battle royal after
eliminating Tom Zenk.
17.
Larry Zbyszko was stripped of the AWA World title on December
12, 1990 when Zbyszko left the inactive AWA for WCW. The
AWA closed in 1991.
18.
The promotion reopens in 1996. Jonnie Stewart defeated Larry
Gligorovich to win the title.
19.
King Kong Bundy is stripped of the title by AWA Superstars
owner Dale Gagne.
20.
The Patriot (Danny Dominion) defeated Gagne in an
impromptu match to win the title.
21.
Takao Omori defeated Steve Corino in 24 minutes, 53 seconds
with the Axe Bomber to become the 32nd AWA World Heavyweight
Champion. Evan Karagias had previously been fired by AWA
President Dale R. Gagne for misconduct and refusal of defending
the Title as scheduled.
23. AWA
parts ways with Zero-One MAX and strips Masato Tanaka of the title; Title awarded to Larry Zbyszko since he never was beatem fpr the belt.
